Phyllis started doing taxes when she was 16 years old back in 1959.  She got  a part-time job after school at the H&R Block office in Bellows Falls VT.  After working in the office for a few years, she bought the franchise.  She owned and operated the Bellows Falls office until 1976.  That office was sold and she moved to Littleton, NH, where she purchased the H&R Block francise there.  The office was located right above the Profido's Store and Deli on Main Street.   Phyllis  did taxes during tax season, drove cab in the summer months and taught tax school in the fall.  She was a single mother raising six children.  Her daughter Deb started working in the office with her in 1978 as a receptionist doing filing, making appointments and copying paperwork.  In those days all tax returns were done by hand. 

 

In 1981, Phyllis sold the H&R Block office and went out on her own.  She had just a small office in her house in Monroe.  She use to travel to Littleton a couple times a week and set up shop in the Littleton Diner and at the Continental 93 Hotel.  During this time Phyllis went back to college.  She had great knowledege of taxes and accounting but lacked the degree.  So she set out to correct that.  She got her bachelors degree in Accounting in 1984 and then her Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1986.  

 

Over the years the business grew.  At one time Phyllis moved the office to Woodsville, NH. into it's own building, in which she also had an office supply store.  After the economy fell out in the early 90's she decieded to move the office back to the house in Monroe and consentrate on what she did best.

 

In January of 2001, Phyllis's husband Weldon Knights passed away after a long illness.  During that tax season she made plans to pass the business on to her daughter, Deb, so Phyllis could do something she had always wanted to do, move to the warmer climate of Florida.  Phyllis finished out the tax season and then moved to Florida in June of 2001, where she opened another office, Phyllis Knights Tax Service of Tallahassee.

 

In June of 2001, Deb, who had worked for years either in the office or behind the scenes for her mother took over the house and the business in Monroe.  Deb with the help of her oldest son, Matt run the office. 

 

Today Knights Tax Service has approimately 400 clients.
